Drongadoir - Irish Whiskey Cocktail - April 2026

Posted by Irish Whiskey USA on

The Godfather legacy does not only live on in the movies. The film also popularized a famous 70's Scotch cocktail favored by Marlon Brando. Simple to make with basically 2 ingredients, The Godfather is a variation of a classic Old Fashioned with the simple syrup replaced with Amaretto liqueur. American versions using bourbon exist and are known as the Boss. The IWSA version is called Drongadóir,  an Irish Gaelic reference to an Irish gang member or mobster. Our version keeps the Italian based almond liqueur but of course uses Irish Whiskey.

EQUIPMENT

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 oz Redbreast Kentucky Oak Irish Whiskey
  • 0.5 oz Gabriello Amaretto Di Toscana Liqueur
  • Ice
  • Orange twist (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Combine ingredients in shaker with ice
  • Stir until chilled
  • Pour into glass with fresh ice
  • Garnish with orange twist if desired

The IWSA uses Redbreast Kentucky Oak to play up the toasted oak flavors with the almond sweetness. This Redbreast variation also brings a high 50.5% abv, perfect for cocktails. There are many varieties of amaretto, our choice is readily available and is not overly sweet or syrupy. This cocktail is simple enough to experiment with the Irish Whiskey used, the type of amaretto liqueur, and the ratio between the two.
